Assistant Chief - Fire Marshal

Anticipated Hiring Range: $31.41 - $40.83
 
DEFINITION

Under direction of the Fire Chief and/or their designee, the main purpose of the position is to supervise and conduct fire and life safety code development, inspections and enforcement. Position is responsible for planning, organizing and leading the Fire Loss section, developing/enforcing fire/life safety codes, examining plans, fire education and investigation, pre-fire plans, hydrants and records management.  Performs related work as directed.

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Not all inclusive): 

Develops programs and standards for fire inspection and investigation; reviews plans for code compliance; instructs personnel in fire inspection and investigation. Supervises fire inspection and section staff; instructs, sets standards, reviews work, coordinates, and counsels. Reviews policies, codes, ordinances and laws relating to fire inspection and investigation; reviews and proposes revised codes. Coordinates with the Water Department and plans for water distribution expansion and/or modification. Conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing structures; investigates complaints of fire code violations; prepares code enforcement documentation. Investigates fire scenes; collects evidence; interviews witnesses; investigates burn injuries and fatalities. Provides administrative support to Fire Chief and Deputy Chief in various duties as assigned. (i.e.: Insurance Service Organization (ISO) schedule & accreditation) Responds to emergencies as command staff; fights fires; administers emergency medical care; serves as any function as assigned by incident command (IC) or may even function in the IC role. Functions within the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) when it is activated. Prepares Section annual and five year plan, budgets, and prepares routine and specialized reports related to duties assigned to the section. Attends professional and technical seminars, training classes and conferences; and assigns those under them to attend as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) within Fire Science, Management and/or other job related degree as determined by the Fire Chief. A minimum five (5) years previous supervisory (Lieutenant or above) experience within a professional fire department, a minimum four (4) years of experience with that includes fire code inspection, plans review and fire scene investigations; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by the Fire Chief 
 
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Florida Firefighter's Certificate of Compliance, Florida State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Florida State Fire Safety Inspector, Florida State Fire Officer I within 18 months of employment, Florida State Driver's License.
