DEFINITION:

The purpose of this job/class within the organization is to assist the Fire Marshal in conducting fire and life safety code development, inspections and enforcement. Position is responsible for assisting with planning and organizing the Fire Prevention section, developing/enforcing fire/life safety codes, examining plans, fire education and investigation, pre-fire plans, hydrants, and records management. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fire Marshal. Performance is reviewed through observations, reports, and results achieved.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Not all-inclusive):

Conducts fire plan reviews for compliance with adopted fire codes and standards. Conducts field inspection of work in progress or completed under approved fire and building permits to ensure conformance with adopted fire codes and standards. Conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing structures; investigates complaints of fire code violations; prepares code compliance documentation. Acts as liaison between operations and fire safety inspectors on pre-fire plans. Investigates fire scenes; collects evidence; interviews witnesses; investigates burn injuries and fatalities. Provides administrative support to the Fire Marshal in various duties as assigned. Assists the Fire Marshal as needed to implement policies and procedures as they pertain to the Fire Prevention Division. Assists and advises the Fire Marshal on matters pertaining to fire prevention and protection. May be asked to assume duties as Fire Marshal in the Fire Marshal's absence Functions within the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) when it is activated. Attend and represent the Fire Department at meetings, seminars and training classes related to code applications and development, fire protection systems and equipment, inspection and plan review practices as assigned. Position is subject to being "on-call" and working after normal City work hours as well as on weekends and holidays. Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess six (6) years in fire service, fire administration or closely related experience, including two (2) years supervisory experience (lieutenant or higher) in a professional fire department. Must possess an Associate's Degree in Fire Science, Management and/or other job-related degree as determined by the Fire Chief within 18 months of employment. Must possess a minimum three (3) years of experience that includes fire code inspection, plans review and fire scene investigations; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by the Fire Chief.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Must possess a Florida State Firefighter's Certificate of Compliance. Must possess a Florida State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Must possess a Florida State Fire Safety Inspector Certificate of Compliance. Must possess a Florida State Fire Safety Inspector II or obtain within 24 months of employment. Must possess a valid Florida State Driver's License.
